In modern world, like electronics, communication, science & technology have undergone rapid development, doors have opened globally for every nation to showcase wider potential and create new markets. New standards and quality are being set as a benchmark and generalized on International backgrounds. Students across the world have also realized this change in the thinking minds and are quickly adopting them by facing new challenges beyond the restricted walls and boundaries, like studying MBBS in Abroad.

Medicine and Healthcare sector has also experienced the evolution and is now one of the most globalized sectors presently. Various scholarly articles and research papers have coined the term ‘health tourism’ and ‘medical tourism’. While the former defines Health Tourism as the “organized travel outside one’s local environment for the maintenance, enhancement or restoration of an individual’s wellbeing in mind and body”, the latter defines Medical Tourism as “the organized travel outside one’s natural healthcare jurisdiction for the enhancement or restoration of the individual’s health through medical intervention”. These two definitions clearly explain how citizens, often restricted by huge queues and limited infrastructure are looking for better treatments abroad, also giving indigenous talents to look for international degrees and practice globally. In other words, doing MBBS in Abroad.

This is affirmed by the fact that the international healthcare sector is an industry sustained by 617 million individuals with an annual growth of 3.9% worth $513 billion.

Challenges in the Medical Education in India:

When it comes to medical education in India, students studying in India are homebound due to various limitations.  They are often found helpless by the limited number of seats, extremely high competition, huge expenditure and donations despite which they don’t get chances and need to drop a year to compete again. So the best options students have is to get a NEET qualification and even if they do not stand at the front few rows, and may not get admission to the MCI Universities in India, they can easily apply for a Medical Graduation abroad with the same qualification and a valid passport.

Global Choices :

With just the idea of applying MBBS in abroad, students are landed in a world full of new scopes, choices and smart opportunities. Few make their minds instantly while few are still speculating on the options they should take. However, this is not a simple decision as your complete career depends on the choices you make. Before you choose any country at large and then focus on one or a few Universities, in particular, you should have the answers of where, why, when, what and how. Here we will provide information about the places becoming popular for the opportunities they provide to foreign students in the medical education sector, their standard, and quality of education, fee structure and their best Universities.

When the world is open to us, we see opportunities everywhere. Among the popular medical destinations that students choose generally the obvious choices are USA, UK, AUSTRALIA, CANADA, NEW ZEALAND and then come CHINA, PHILLIPINES, SINGAPORE, KAZAKHSTAN, and other regions.

The USA and UK are the most celebrated destinations and we all know the reason. The same applies to Australia, but the challenge with all these are the huge expenses they incur for their regular programs. Also, their rigid admission timings make it difficult for students to enroll as per their convenience. These states, especially UK and AUSTRALIA are renowned globally for their high education standards, to maintain which they generally consider multiple entrance scores which makes it even more difficult for students to get seats in their top Universities. In China, it is cheaper than the other states, but it becomes a mandate for students to learn Mandarin in order to communicate effectively. Rest locations are comparatively way cheaper than the top States, but when it comes to the environment, living standards and living costs, students are compelled to give it a second thought.

The Caribbean is currently considered the Medical Education Catalyzer and Facilitator at a largely global scale and is becoming increasingly popular among all overseas medical aspirants. The most significant reasons that can be considered are:

  4. LESS EXPENSES : Studying in the Caribbean schools reduces the education costs in multifold as compared to the USA, UK or CANADA, thus enabling students to direct the expenses in other areas like lodging, fooding, and other requisites.
    1. NO ENTRANCE OR QUALIFIER TEST: In the Caribbean, students get rid of the tiring tests of MCAT, SAT, IELTS / TOEFL.
  5. STATE SUPPORT: The Islands of the Caribbean are constantly trying to support superior high education, with the help of the Association of Caribbean Tertiary Institutions for collaboration and cooperation in higher education.
  6. GLOBAL EDUCATION STANDARDS: Caribbean Medical School maintain USA pattern keeping the total education system exactly the same and globally acceptable. They run regular tests conduct seminars, and clinical rotations to ensure that students get the best quality education.

Caribbean medical schools can be divided into two categories: Regional and Offshore.

Regional schools only provide graduation and residency within the territory, whereas the offshore schools have global accreditations and their curriculum based on US standards. They allow their students to apply for residency programs in the USA or Canada. These offshore medical colleges offer an MD degree as they do in the United States.

To explain it further the Caribbean Medical University students first need to enroll for a Premedical program of three semesters (14 weeks each), on completion of which they can directly enroll for the MD program.

The MD program consists of  10 semesters, out of which 4 semesters comprising Basic Sciences are taught in the College, and 6 semesters of Clinical Medical Sciences are taught at affiliated hospitals or approved training centers in the US, UK or Canada. A USMLE review course is generally dedicated to the review of the students’ preparation for the USMLE Step 1 exam. It consists of 5 core system-based courses, supported by Kaplan materials and delivered inside a classroom environment. On completion, students get certified for the Step 1 exam. On completing the first 2 years of the MD curriculum, i.e four-semesters students need to take the USMLE STEP 1 Exam before they are eligible to apply for Clinical Clerkship.
